Installation & Commissioning Technician

A leading water treatment company is looking for an experienced, result driven candidate to take up the role of an Installation & Commissioning Technician.

Job summary: Assist the Production Team with FAT Activities and occasionally manufacturing tasks. Predominantly act as a Site Supervisor/ Site Technical Advisor in directing and directly assisting the site Mechanical and Electrical Installation Teams. Perform all site works from installation, cold commissioning, hot commissioning and finally performing the site acceptance test and handover to prospective clients.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Act as appointed construction supervisor.
  • Maintain a good relationship with the client and its site/project representative.
  • Management, supervision and assistance of all site workers and subcontractors appointed for the installation and commissioning.
  • Carry out services and repairs on equipment locally and outside South Africa – specifically into Africa.
  • Install and commission plants at various customers both nationally and internationally.
  • Review bill of materials (BOM) to be issued from the workshop with the Project Engineer and Stores Manager prior to shipment to site.
  • Check materials delivered to site against signed BOM issued to site and report any missing and or damaged to the assigned Project Engineer.
  • Manage and control all stock and materials issued to the respective sites.
  • Responsible for all site activities execution within the agreed timeline, budget and in accordance with project specifications.
  • Manage site times effectively and provide daily reporting activities on site, with reference to site programs.
  • Notify the Project Engineer of any issues that may affect the installation/commissioning programme and project budget.
  • Responsible for commissioning activities (hot and cold) as well as the completion off all associated documentation.
  • Ensure that serviced and installed/commissioned plant and equipment conforms to specifications before being handed over.
  • Ensure that the plant is handed over in good working order to the client and documented accordingly to project/service requirements.
  • Downloading of various PLC programmes, operating of water treatment of plants via HMI as well as configuring of the various control settings and inputs.
  • Ensure all instrumentation is installed, calibrated and correctly terminated so as to with the plant PLC.
  • Maintain a neat and presentable demeanor at all times while interacting with the client and the client’s appointed representatives.
  • Maintain Safety Precautions and ensure that the site is managed in a safe and orderly manner and sound housekeeping principles are maintained.
  • Maintain the condition of your rental/company motor vehicle & tools in an acceptable manner.
  • Manage expenses within set budget.
  • Sign delivery notes on behalf of the company.
  • Support and assist with workshop activities.
  • Participate and assist with factory, site, and performance testing.
  • Carry – out site audits to identify potential operational problems and performance efficiency improvements on Water Treatment Plants.
  • Signing of commissioning, beneficial occupation and handover certificates subject to the written approval of the Project Engineer.
  • Execution of all duties in accordance with the relevant company policies and procedures that are subject to review from time to time.

Duties:

  • Participate and assist in Factory Acceptance and Site Acceptance Testing of plant equipment.
  • Attend and participate in site installation and commissioning planning meetings internally and as maybe required by the client.
  • Travel to client and or installation sites locally or internationally as maybe required.
  • Perform risk assessments on sites prior to or during site establishments in line with & agreed client requirements.
  • Perform safety assessments on all operational sites as well as completing and maintaining all relevant safety documentation for the operational site.
  • Where required check compliance of civils with minimum requirements for plant as per agreement with client/civil subcontractor.
  • Manage, supervise, and assist where required site activities pertaining to civil interfacing, rigging of equipment into position, mechanical installations, and electrical installations.
  • Perform installation of equipment when not under scope of an appointed contractor.
  • Transport small equipment to and from as when and when required.
  • Manage, plan, and execute pre – commissioning, cold and hot commissioning (process compliance)/ Site Acceptance Testing.
  • Managing and rectification of punch items/snag lists during and after installation and commissioning.
  • Manage final client handover as the company’s representative.
  • Manage and track the site activities programme and ensure timelines are strictly adhered to.
  • Immediately report any site issues that may negatively affect the budget, programme, performance of the plant to the Project Engineer.
  • Undertake service and repairs of installations and equipment as maybe required during the defect’s liability period.
  • Manage tool registers for company issued tools and equipment.
  • Checking deliveries on arrival to sites sent from the execution team and identify short or missing items.
  • Generate and issue site reports and daily site reports.
  • Record and track site expenses such as but not limited to on – site purchases and travel log sheets.
  • Communicate with EC&I and Process Teams for a successful pre – commissioning up to handover.
  • Plant fault finding during commissioning and testing.
  • Generate red line drawings and mark up any modifications on site documentation and drawings issued for installation and up to handover.
  • Perform ad-hoc duties required by your designated Departmental Manager.
  • Train client’s operators post installation and commissioning and prior to handover.
  • Ensure all training registers are completed in full and returned to the respective Project Managers for record keeping and traceability.
  • Maintain Safety Precautions and sound housekeeping principles and due care of all equipment/assets under your control/care.
  • Perform any other duties required by your designated Manager.
  • Ensure all equipment is setup, checked and recorded as operating to design before leaving the site.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 or equal Technical Qualification (Artisan) or assessed equivalent competence.
  • Trade preferences: Millwright, Fitter & Turner, Electrical (Low voltage) and Control & Instrumentation.
  • Atleast 5 years’ related industry experience – commissioning of plant equipment preferably in the water industry.
  • Understanding of processes related to the water industry – ability to read process diagrams.
  • Understanding of control philosophies.
  • Valid Driver’s license.
  • Valid passport.
  • Travel is an inherent requirement of the job function – the incumbent must therefore undergo the necessary medical tests to be declared fit to travel and to work prior to appointment in this position.
  • The incumbent must be available to travel locally and internationally for training and work-related matters.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Excellent administrative skills for the planning, coordination of site activities.
  • Strong knowledge of piping systems and their construction.
  • Excellent knowledge of Control and Instrumentation as all plants are fully automated.
  • Water Treatment Process experience would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Act, Act 85 of 1993 as applicable to the installation and commissioning activities.
