Junior Infrastructure & Virtualisation Engineer

About the Position
As an Intermediate Virtualisation & Infrastructure Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting and maintaining modern virtual infrastructure environments. You'll be responsible for managing virtual machines, monitoring platform performance, assisting with infrastructure migrations, backups, and system maintenance, while ensuring high availability and reliability. This is an excellent opportunity for a technically driven professional with experience in Proxmox or VMware who enjoys troubleshooting, optimising infrastructure, and working in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.Skills
Key Responsibilities
Virtualisation & Infrastructure Operations
- Support and maintain virtualisation platforms, with Proxmox as the primary environment.
- Monitor hypervisor health, cluster performance, storage utilisation, and overall resource availability.
- Provision, configure, and manage the lifecycle of virtual machines across internal and customer environments.
- Assist with cluster administration, host monitoring, high-availability (HA) environments, and capacity planning.
- Troubleshoot virtualisation platform performance and operational issues.
- Support scheduled infrastructure maintenance, upgrades, and platform enhancements.
Virtual Machine Deployment & Migration
- Provision virtual machines in line with project and operational requirements.
- Configure virtual machine resources, including CPU, memory, storage, networking, tagging, and templates.
- Assist with virtual machine migrations, including VMware to Proxmox migrations.
- Support migration planning, testing, and cutover activities to minimise service disruption.
Backup & Recovery
- Monitor and maintain the health of backup environments, including:
- Veeam Backup & Replication
- Nakivo Backup Server
- Investigate failed backup jobs and resolve restore-related issues.
- Monitor backup storage utilisation and retention policies.
- Perform VM-level restore operations when required.
- Assist with backup optimisation, repository maintenance, and recovery testing.
Storage & Platform Maintenance
- Monitor storage pools, storage health, and disk utilisation.
- Assist with infrastructure performance tuning and optimisation.
- Support ongoing platform maintenance, including:
- Proxmox updates
- VMware ESXi and vCenter updates
- Firmware upgrades
- Repository clean-up
- Host performance optimisation
- Perform routine hypervisor maintenance.
- Troubleshoot infrastructure and virtualisation-related issues.
- Maintain accurate technical documentation.
- Manage and update support tickets within a client-facing service environment.
Advantageous Experience
Experience with any of the following would be beneficial:- Ceph
- ZFS
- Storage replication
- Cluster management
- Datacentre infrastructure
- Infrastructure migrations
- Networking diagnostics and connectivity troubleshooting
- Managed services (MSP) or hosted infrastructure environments
Requirements
Qualifications
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Information Technology, Infrastructure, Systems Administration, or a related field preferred.
- Industry certifications in virtualisation, infrastructure, or backup technologies will be advantageous.
Experience
- 2–4+ years' experience in infrastructure administration, virtualisation, or systems support.
- Hands-on experience with virtualisation platforms such as Proxmox or VMware.
- Experience monitoring backup solutions and performing restore operations.
- Experience supporting production infrastructure environments.
- Previous experience within an MSP, hosting provider, or customer-facing infrastructure environment would be advantageous.
