Senior Electrical Engineer - CA Global Group
Job Description:
Our client is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join its Owner’s Team on a greenfield gold project in Namibia. Reporting to the Project Manager, the successful candidate will provide technical leadership, oversight and assurance for all electrical engineering activities across the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning phases. Acting as the Owner’s senior electrical representative, the role will ensure that electrical systems are safely designed, procured, installed, energised and handed over to Operations in line with the project’s technical, statutory, budget and schedule requirements. The position is based at the project/engineering office in Namibia, with regular site inspections and construction oversight.
Responsibilities:
- Provide Owner’s technical oversight and review of electrical designs, specifications, calculations, load lists, single-line diagrams, protection studies and cable schedules.
- Ensure designs comply with the project design basis, Namibian legislation and international electrical standards, with a focus on constructability, operability, maintainability and safety-in-design.
- Review HV/MV/LV power distribution, substations, transformers, switchgear, MCCs, VSDs, generators, UPS, earthing and lightning protection for the process plant (crushing, milling, CIL/CIP) and non-process infrastructure.
- Coordinate electrical interfaces with process, mechanical, civil/structural and instrumentation/control disciplines, as well as grid connection and utility requirements.
- Support procurement by developing scopes of work, technical specifications and tender documentation, and participating in technical bid evaluations, vendor document reviews and factory acceptance testing.
- Oversee electrical construction and installation activities, including site inspections, review of method statements and ITPs, witnessing of testing, and close-out of defects and non-conformances.
- Support pre-commissioning, energisation, commissioning, punch-list close-out and handover of electrical systems to Operations, including review of switching plans and as-built documentation.
- Provide input into project controls, identifying electrical cost and schedule risks and supporting the technical assessment of design changes, variations and contractor claims.
- Promote a zero-harm culture, ensuring isolation, lock-out/tag-out and energisation controls are appropriately addressed.
- Challenge contractor proposals constructively to protect the Owner’s long-term interests, and mentor junior engineering and construction personnel.
Requirements: Qualification and Skill
- Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognised university or tertiary institution.
- Professional registration, or eligibility for registration, with a recognised engineering body (registration or eligibility in Namibia advantageous).
- 15+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience, with substantial exposure to major mining, minerals processing, infrastructure or heavy industrial capital projects.
- Senior-level experience within an Owner’s Team, EPC/EPCM, engineering consultancy or major construction environment, across the full project lifecycle through to energisation, handover and close-out.
- Experience on greenfield gold mining projects is advantageous.
- Strong practical knowledge of HV and LV distribution systems, substations, protection coordination, power quality and the review of electrical studies and vendor documentation.
- Sound working knowledge of project controls, contract administration, change management, variations and contractor claims.
- Strong leadership, stakeholder management and decision-making skills, with the ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
- Willingness to work in a remote project/site environment.
