Job Summary:
The Safety Lead is accountable for the supervision and management of safety programs and practices on construction sites that involve structural, mechanical, piping, and platework projects. This position entails the development and execution of safety policies, the supervision of site inspections, the training of personnel, and the guarantee of adherence to local and international safety regulations. The Safety Lead is instrumental in the prevention of incidents and accidents, the mitigation of risk, and the preservation of a safe work environment.

Safety and Environment Management:
  • To co-ordinate all safety activities.
  • Report on the company Safety programme and Safety Statistics to all stakeholders. 
  • Maintain procedures and manuals on an annual basis and ensure that Departmental Managers update work procedures as necessary.
  • Develop, implement, and update comprehensive safety policies and project-specific safety plans.
  • Maintain Risk Control Management by carrying out risk control audits and ensuring all aspects of risk are addressed.
  • Liaise with departments in carrying out Risk Control.
  • Ensure good relationship with company’s Clients and Consultants.
  • Conduct Induction Training Head Office and Sites.
  • Co-ordinate Internal and External requests for courses and seminars.
  • Attend Client’s safety meetings when required on site.
  • Ensure all site safety files are kept up to date, according to client specifications.
  • Record all accidents, lost time and first aid on relevant annexures.
  • Carry out compliance audits on all sites.
    • Complete monthly safety reports, which must be forwarded to a QA Manager
    • Liaise with Client’s safety representatives on a regular basis, on behalf of the Company.
    • Schedule and attend site safety representatives, committee and toolbox meetings.
    • Schedule and conduct onsite induction and client required trainings.
    • Carry out all Risk Assessments and conduct training on all Risk Assessments.
    • Carry out daily toolbox talks when required.
    • Enforce all Health and Safety requirements to ensure zero accidents / incidents occur.
    • Stop all unsafe working practices.
    • Environmental activities.
    • Ensure ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 systems are implemented and updated.
    • Draw up environmental management plans and method statements for projects.
    • Review clients SHE specifications and ensure compliance.
    • Conduct regular audits on internal and external stakeholders.
  • Training and Awareness:
    • Staff Training: Develop and deliver safety training programs for all site personnel, including orientation for new hires and ongoing training for existing staff. Ensure that training materials are current and relevant.
    • Safety Awareness: Promote a culture of safety on-site by raising awareness and encouraging safe practices among employees. Conduct regular safety briefings and meetings.
    • Training Matrix:  Updated training matrix to be kept.
    • Site Inspections and Monitoring:
      • Inspections: Perform routine site inspections to monitor compliance with safety protocols, identify hazards, and ensure that safety equipment is used properly. Document findings and follow up on corrective actions.
      • Incident Investigation: Investigate accidents, near misses, and safety incidents to determine causes and implement preventive measures. Prepare detailed reports and recommendations for improvement.
      • Emergency Preparedness: Develop and implement emergency response plans and procedures. Conduct drills and simulations to ensure preparedness for various emergency situations.
      • Documentation and Reporting:
        • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, training sessions, incident reports, and compliance audits. Ensure that documentation is complete and accessible.
        • Reporting: Prepare and submit regular safety reports to the Project Manager and senior management. Highlight key safety metrics, incident trends, and areas for improvement.
        • Regulatory Reporting: Ensure that all required safety-related documentation and reports are submitted to regulatory agencies as needed.
         
        Coordination and Communication:
        • Stakeholder Interaction: Collaborate with project managers, construction teams, and subcontractors to ensure that safety requirements are integrated into all aspects of the construction process.
        • Safety Committees: Participate in or lead safety committees and working groups. Facilitate communication between various stakeholders to address safety concerns and develop solutions.
        • Vendor Management: Oversee the safety performance of subcontractors and vendors. Ensure that they adhere to safety standards and practices as specified in their contracts.
        Qualifications and Experience:
        • Grade 12 or equivalent.
        • SACPCMP Registration - Compulsory
        • SAMTRAC (NOSA)
        • ISO 9001:2000 quality management system qualification is compulsory.
        • ISO 14001 & 45001 Certification
        • Advanced OHS Act 85 of 1993 course or equivalent a must.
        • Relevant HSE certifications required (HIRA, Legal Liability, Fall Protection Plan Development, RCAT, etc)
        • 5-7 years of experience in a safety management role within the construction industry. Experience with structural, mechanical, piping, and platework projects is advantageous.
        • Technical Skills:
          • In-depth knowledge of safety regulations, standards, and best practices applicable to construction projects. Ability to conduct risk assessments and implement safety controls.
        • Certification:
          • Valid safety management certifications or licenses (e.g., NEBOSH, OSHA). Compliance with local safety regulations and industry standards.
          • Leadership:
            • Strong leadership and team management skills. Ability to influence and motivate staff to adhere to safety practices and standards.
          • Communication:
            • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for delivering training, conducting briefings, and preparing reports.
          • Analytical Skills:
            • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to assess risks, investigate incidents, and develop effective safety solutions.
          • Attention to Detail:
            • Keen attention to detail and thoroughness in conducting inspections, audits, and reporting.
           
          Physical Requirements:
          • Ability to work on construction sites and in various environmental conditions.
          • Ability to perform physical tasks associated with site supervision, including climbing ladders and accessing different areas of the site.
           
          Additional Information:
          • This role may require travel to various project sites across Africa.
          • Accommodation and transportation arrangements will be provided as necessary.
           
          Work Environment:
          • Hours: Standard business hours. Potential overtime may be required based on project demands and logistics needs.
