Our client is seeking a results-driven Category Manager Liquor to take ownership of a diverse portfolio focused on replenishment, pricing strategy, margin management (both at Distribution Centre and Retail level), and supplier relationships. The ideal candidate will also be responsible for overseeing promotions, administrative functions, and day-to-day reporting to support sales performance and operational efficiency.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Achieve budgeted sales and gross profit targets (DC & Retail)
  • Control stock holdings to align with budgeted levels
  • Manage inbound supplier service levels
  • Oversee KVI (Key Value Item) price management
  • Drive sales while managing expenses and supplier recoveries
  • Maintain and grow GP percentages across all categories
  • Verify pricing claims from drop shipment and direct suppliers
  • Build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Align supplier strategies with distribution center goals
  • Monitor and manage slow-moving (“dog line”) products
  • Replenish stock at competitive market prices
  • Maintain accurate data using AS400 system
  • Negotiate deals and maintain solid retailer relationships
  • Ensure optimal stock levels within the warehouse
  • Support sales through innovation, promotions, and alignment with consumer trends
  • Participate in advertising and promotional initiatives
Skills & Experience Required:
  • Matric (compulsory)
  • A National Certificate/Diploma in Marketing Management or similar (advantageous)
  • A Diploma or Degree in Purchasing or Commerce (preferred)
  • At least 5 years of experience in the liquor industry
  • Strong negotiation and communication skills
  • Proficiency in relevant computer systems
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
  • Previous experience in FMCG buying is essential
  • Experience with advertising and promotional strategies
