Assistant VAT and Tax Accountant

Job Description

We’re recruiting for an Assistant Accountant (VAT & Tax) to join the finance team of a large, well-known group operating across South Africa. This role is ideal for someone with a strong tax foundation and a keen eye for compliance and detail.

This is a fast-paced, structured business environment where finance plays a vital role in supporting operational success. You’ll be part of a Group Services team, helping to drive tax compliance and accurate financial reporting across multiple entities.

 

What the role is about
You’ll manage VAT submissions, reconciliations, and support wider tax compliance across the business. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys digging into detail, solving tax queries, and staying current with evolving SARS requirements.

 

What you’ll be doing

• Prepare and reconcile monthly input and output VAT reports
• Complete and submit VAT returns and ensure timely payments
• Review VAT processes across business units and suggest improvements
• Assist with income tax, provisional tax, PAYE, and other tax submissions
• Respond to SARS queries and manage supporting documents
• Support internal stakeholders with tax advice and risk mitigation

What we’re looking for

• BCom Accounting qualification
• SAIPA/SAICA articles advantageous
• 2 years relevant experience post-articles
• Strong knowledge of VAT and general tax compliance
• Proficient in Excel and able to perform reconciliations to completion
• High attention to detail and strong stress management
• Comfortable engaging with SARS and internal stakeholders
