Our client is looking for a SHE Officer to join their Compliance (SHEEQ) team within the manufacturing environment.
This role is responsible for acting as the on-shift representative and ambassador for all Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) policies, procedures, standards, and work instructions. The successful candidate will ensure that all SHE systems and compliance requirements are effectively implemented and maintained during their shift while providing guidance and support to employees across the facility.
The SHE Officer will serve as the primary point of contact for SHE matters during each shift, ensuring safe working conditions, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement in health, safety, and environmental performance.

Key Responsibilities

Business Protection

Our client is looking for a professional who can ensure compliance with all regulatory, ISO, and legal requirements relating to Safety, Health, and Environmental standards.
Responsibilities include:
  • Monitoring implementation of SHE policies, procedures, and standards across the site during each shift
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, ISO standards, and legal obligations
  • Supporting the achievement of Compliance Department KPIs and targets
  • Implementing audits, inspections, and compliance checks on SHE systems
  • Ensuring that legal documentation, inspections, and reports are maintained and submitted to the relevant authorities when required
  • Monitoring activities such as water sampling, environmental checks, and regulatory reporting

Health & Safety Management

The SHE Officer will provide health and safety guidance and support across manufacturing operations.
Responsibilities include:
  • Providing SHE consulting and advisory services to plant operations
  • Investigating workplace incidents and implementing preventative measures
  • Conducting Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA)
  • Reviewing and updating Standard Work Procedures (SWPs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Delivering SHE inductions and training to employees and contractors
  • Conducting regular health and safety inspections of equipment, facilities, machinery, and PPE
  • Issuing work permits for staff and contractors where required
  • Supporting initiatives that promote a strong safety culture through toolbox talks and safety bulletins

Environmental Management

Our client requires someone who can support the implementation and maintenance of the Environmental Management System in line with legislative requirements and ISO standards.
Responsibilities include:
  • Ensuring environmental management processes are implemented and maintained
  • Conducting monthly environmental assessments and reporting findings
  • Preparing and maintaining an environmental audit schedule
  • Conducting internal audits and implementing corrective actions
  • Investigating workplace incidents, injuries, and environmental concerns
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives related to environmental performance

Energy Management

The role includes supporting initiatives to reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency within the facility.
Responsibilities include:
  • Supporting plant energy efficiency initiatives
  • Promoting awareness around energy-saving practices across the site
  • Implementing energy-saving measures such as equipment shutdown schedules and lighting controls
  • Identifying opportunities to introduce energy-efficient technologies
  • Supporting programs to detect and repair energy losses such as compressed air leaks

Risk Management

The SHE Officer will support risk identification and mitigation initiatives across the facility.
Responsibilities include:
  • Ensuring compliance with current legislation and safety standards
  • Conducting risk assessments across departments during HSE inspections
  • Reviewing contractor risk assessments prior to commencement of work
  • Identifying hazards and evaluating risk levels
  • Implementing controls and improvement projects to reduce significant risks
  • Supporting training and awareness programs to improve hazard management

People Support & Collaboration

Our client is looking for someone who can actively support employees and promote a strong SHE culture across the organisation.
Responsibilities include:
  • Attending daily production and SHEEQ meetings to provide safety updates
  • Supporting the SHE representatives and operational teams with compliance requirements
  • Driving the implementation of SHE initiatives and improvement actions
  • Acting as an ambassador for the SHE department across all shifts
  • Assisting with administrative tasks and maintaining SHE documentation systems such as SharePoint
  • Supporting various compliance initiatives, including Blood Lead monitoring programs and improvement plans
  • Participating in shift overtime and rotational weekend standby duties where required

Additional Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Support initiatives related to Safety, Health, Environment, Quality, and Customer Focus
  • Perform any additional duties aligned with the needs of the department

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

Minimum:
  • Grade 12 (Matric)
  • National Diploma in Safety Management or equivalent qualification
  • Alternatively SAMTRAC certification
Advantageous:
  • Tertiary qualification in Safety Management, Environmental Management, or related field
  • Training or experience related to OHS, ISO, Environmental, Noise, and Energy management

Experience

Minimum:
  • 3 years’ experience in a manufacturing or related environment
Advantageous:
  • Experience in battery manufacturing or similar industrial environments

Technical Competencies

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act)
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 systems
  • Understanding of relevant safety regulations and compliance systems
  • Computer literacy, particularly MS Office
