Our client is looking for a dedicated candidate who will be responsible for the execution of engineering/construction works, and interpretation of drawings and specifications for such works. The candidate will be responsible for a particular section of a project and may be responsible for planning and programming.

Responsibilities:

  • Contract Management and Client Relationship:
    • Assists in identifying and documenting contract variations and claims.
    • Assists in communicating with the client and other parties regarding contractual issues.
    • Assists in resolving contractual disputes alongside more senior personnel.
    • Gains a basic understanding of the construction contract.
    • Assists in managing contracts related to the construction project.
    • Assists in ensuring that both parties meet all contractual conditions.
    • Assists in handling contractual disputes and working towards amicable resolutions.
    • Gains basic knowledge of common construction contract types.
    • Assists in liaising with the client and the professional team on contractual issues.
  • Construction Management:
    • Assists in identifying and troubleshooting technical issues on site.
    • Develops basic knowledge of emerging construction methods and technologies.
    • Assists in providing technical guidance to subcontractors on complex construction details
  • Health, Safety, and Environment:
    • Assists in applying SHE principles and procedures on the construction site.
    • Assists in ensuring health, safety, security, and housekeeping standards compliance.
    • Assists in educating team members on job requirements and safety regulations.
    • Assists in ensuring job safety assessments are signed by employees before starting tasks.
    • Contributes to the implementation of safety policies and procedures.
    • May participate in daily safety meetings and training sessions.
    • Assists in reviewing safety checklists.
    • Assists in ensuring all personnel on site have the necessary mandatory PPE.
    • Assists in identifying high-risk activities and contributes to risk mitigation planning.
    • Assists in conducting site inspections for potential hazards and implementing corrective actions.
    • Assists in enforcing adherence to safety regulations and protocols.
    • Assists in reporting safety incidents promptly.
    • Promotes and helps to manages, enforces, and monitor HSE requirements on site.
    • Daily run of safety meetings and training
  • Procurement and Cost Management:
    • Helps coordinate the procurement and management of materials and tools alongside more senior personnel.
    • Contributes to efforts in controlling material inventory to prevent wastage.
    • Helps track and log equipment usage to maintain accountability.
    • Attends meetings and assists in discussions related to ensuring efficient production processes.
    • Assists in communicating with the laboratory to book concrete and density tests as needed.
    • Assists in identifying and reporting material-related issues that may arise on site.
    • Assists in generating reports on material wastage to identify areas for improvement.
    • Assists in compiling information on material, labour, and equipment costs for tasks assigned to them.
    • Assists in identifying and reporting cost variances to the project manager.
    • Assists in recommending cost-saving measures that can be implemented while maintaining quality standards
  • Project Management and Planning:
    • Assists in monitoring progress and takes corrective actions to avoid delays.
    • Reviews the schedule alongside the Site Engineer to find areas for improvement.
    • Assists in communicating the schedule to subcontractors and clarifies any questions they may have.
    • Assists in ensuring all activities are completed in the correct sequence.
    • Monitors progress alongside the Site Engineer and identifies any emerging delays.
    • Assists in updating the schedule to reflect any changes that may occur during the project
  • Quality Assurance and Control:
    • Conduct basic quality checks.
    • Preparation of inspection reports.
    • Support in enforcing quality control standards.
    • Check plans, drawings, and quantities for accuracy.
    • Complete quality assurance tasks (e.g., rebar checks).
    • Assists in ensuring that construction activities meet the required quality standards.
    • Assists in ensuring construction work adheres to SANS regulations and project method statements.
    • Assists in ensuring all necessary inspections are completed and signed off by authorised personnel.
    • Assists in reviewing construction drawings to identify potential quality concerns.
    • Assists in conducting spot checks on various trades to ensure consistent quality.
    • Assists in maintaining a work environment that facilitates efficient quality control practices.
  • Risk Management:
    • Manages simple to moderate risks on projects they are involved in.
    • Identifies potential risks during their daily tasks and routine site activities.
    • Assists in maintaining and updating the Project Risk Register by reporting identified risks.
    • Responds quickly to problems encountered during their tasks and implements effective solutions.
    • Addresses unexpected challenges within their area of responsibility and uses innovative approaches to overcome obstacles.
    • Participates in risk assessments as needed and provides input on mitigating controls.
  • Reporting and Documentation:
    • Assists in preparing periodic progress reports by providing data and updates on their assigned tasks.
    • Documents site activities they participate in, including inspections, meetings, and incidents.
    • Maintains specific sections of the project filing system relevant to their tasks.
    • Ensures timely communication of project updates relevant to their tasks to relevant parties.
    • Assists with archiving project documents electronically or physically according to company policies.
  • People Management:
    • Practices effective people management.
    • Contributes to empowerment initiatives.
    • Co-ordinates and controls the activities of site staff and agrees quality standards set out in contract.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Construction Knowledge:
    • Basic understanding of common construction methods, materials, and safety procedures.

  • Construction Practices:
    • Proficient in various construction practices relevant to the project type.
    • Proficiency in practices relevant to the project type (e.g., concrete, steelwork).
  • Site Coordination: Ability to coordinate and schedule site activities, including subcontractor work.
  • Site Logistics: Basic understanding of material procurement, delivery, and storage on site.
  • Site Documentation:
    • Familiarity with reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications.
    • Ability to read, interpret, and implement construction drawings and specifications.
  • Data Collection: Ability to collect accurate data on site activities, materials, and labour.
  • Communication Protocols: Knowledge of communication protocols for reporting issues and updates to supervisors and project managers.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • BSc/BEng in Civil Engineering.
  • 3-5 years’ experience – data centre experience will be to your advantage.
